Different Immigration Processes to Migrate to Canada

There are different immigration processes for people to migrate to Canada. According to statistics, over 1 million new immigrants will enter the country. However, it does not end at just moving into Canada; you can also secure your Canadian permanent residence.

Do not buy into the lie that the process is complicated. All you need is the correct information to help you with the immigration journey. Of course, the process is no magic, but there are different programs with easy methods.

Before we examine the processes, note that moving into Canada may require a tangible emotional and financial investment. Nevertheless, you will be proud of your choice as Canada is a top country with great quality of life.

The following common immigration processes to migrate to Canada are:

Express Entry

Express Entry is the most direct way to move into Canada. It is the most employed approach for immigrants into the country. Nevertheless, this does not mean everyone that desires to move into the country can migrate via Express Entry.

The best news about Express Entry is that you and your family can move into Canada within a few months. Since 2015, the immigration system has earned tangible global recognition.

Express Entry works via an application system. Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is in charge of these applications from their management to processing. The system is competitive as there may be several eligible candidates ranked against one another. After this, highly ranked candidates are invited to apply for Canadian permanent resident status.

There are several factors to rank the candidates. They include:

i. Age
ii. Language proficiency
iii. Education
iv. Work experience

The Express Entry helps families and individuals to become permanent residents after some months.

The Perfect Guide for Express Entry

a. Know your Eligibility

There are three federal economic immigration programs to know your eligibility as an applicant. They include:

  • The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW)
  • The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST)
  • The Canadian Experience Class (ERC)

These programs qualify candidates for the Express Entry Pool. Nevertheless, every candidate must have at least a year of skilled work experience with quality proficiency in either French or English. Similarly, one must know that other requirements are peculiar to each program.

Finally, there is a screening process for all candidates to examine their possible medical issues or criminal history, which may make them inadmissible.

b. Ensure you have an Express Entry Profile

You should create an Express Entry profile to the pool as an eligible candidate. The profile serves as an Expression of Interest (EOI). Each profile has its score which helps them to know where they are ranked against other candidates.

The ranking score operates using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) of 1,200 points. There are always different steps a candidate can take to improve their CRS score. The principle is simple; the higher your score, the higher your chance for an Express Entry Invitation to Apply (ITA).

The CRS Score is important as a cut-off mark for the Express Entry draws. The immigration system believes that the CRS Score determines if a candidate will succeed in Canada or otherwise. Factors that influence the CRS score include:

– Candidates’ career
– Their language skills
– Their educational history
– Provincial nomination
– Possible qualifying job offer

c. Set up a job bank profile

Although optional, an Express Entry candidate is advised to create a job bank profile to assist a Canadian employer in acquiring the most appropriate worker for their company. The process was compulsory until June 2017 when it became voluntary.

d. Invitation to Apply (ITA)

The Express Entry draws occurs every two weeks. Candidates with a particular rank are invited to apply for Canadian Permanent Residence. However, clients who do not receive invitations have their profile expires after a year. Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is responsible for the event.

e. Improve your CRS Score

Submitting updated and new information will improve an Express Entry profile and score. These include new educational credentials, increased language scores, having a provincial nomination or qualifying job opportunity, and extra work experience.

f. Time to apply for Permanent Residence

Any candidate that has received their Express Entry Invitation to Apply (ITA) has 60 days to apply fully for their permanent residence. It is important that candidates electronically provide detailed personal information with the necessary documentation. Then, you are to wait for a final decision.

Each application requires six months for its approval or otherwise. Approved applications receive authorization for their active permanent resident status.

OTHER DETAILS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT EXPRESS ENTRY

1. Necessary documents for your Express Entry

There are three important documents that you need for your Express Entry. They are:

checkEducational Credentials Assessment (ECA)

Education plays a critical role in CEC and FST candidates as they need it for their CRS score. However, education is essential for the Federal Skilled Worker Program. This process is an evaluation of non-Canadian education by Canadian standards.

You do not need ECA to complete your educational programs.

checkLanguage Test

All Express Entry Candidates must have substantial proficiency in French and English. There are different required scores for each Express Entry-aligned program. The best approach is to submit test scores from an approved language test with your profile.

Considerable options for French are TCF exam and TEF exam while for English are CELPIP General exam or the IELTS General Training exam.

checkPassport

You need a valid passport to be able to submit an Express Entry profile. However, people without a passport can submit alternative identification documents.
With these three documents, you are good to create your Express Entry profile.

2. The Need for Proof of Settlement Funds

Individuals applying for FST and FSW must have sufficient money to settle in Canada. Nevertheless, CEC applicants or people with good job opportunities do not need much money for their proof of settlement. Here is a breakdown of the required amount:

Number of family membersEstimated amount in CAD
1 Person$13,310
2 Person$16,570
3 Person$20,371
4 Person$24,733
5 Person$28,052
6 Person$31,638

Do you want to know the breakdown for this calculation? You can add $3,586 for every family member.

Also, you must ensure that your job offer is valid if you claim to have one. It is important to note that not all job offers are valid as they must meet certain requirements like:

a. Non-season and full-time job
b. Duration is at least a year
c. The job offer has a positive Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or does not require one, and
d. The job offer must be at Level 0, A, or B according to the National Occupational Classification (NOC)

3. Transferring data from your Express Entry Profile

It may be a little surprising that your work experience details will become a part of your Permanent Residence (PR) application. It is not advisable to alter information at this level as it can tamper with your application. Hence, ensure all information is accurate, as you will need documentation to back up the claims.

Ensure you do not provide false information. This act is a serious crime and can lead to a five-year ban from the country.

4. The Estimated Cost of travelling

Here is an overview of the possible cost you may need to travel to Canada using Express Entry Immigration.

a. Educational Credential Assessment: You can budget about $200+ for this. ECA is recommended for CEC and FST candidates (outside the country) and required for FSW applicants.
b. Language Test(s): You will need about $200+ for this test. It is required for all candidates.
c. Medical report: $200+ is a safe amount for this. All clients require a medical report.
d. Police Clearance Certificate(s): This ranges between $100 and above. It is required for all applicants. However, it is dependent on the country of departure.
e. Representation by a lawyer or regulated consultant: this is optional, but it may cost between $2,000 to $5,000.
f. Government dues: the government dues are as follows:

– Processing fee – $850
– Addition of partner or spouse – processing fee is $850, while $515 is for permanent residence. However, you will need $230 for a child if children are your dependent.
– Right of permanent residence fee – you will need $515 for your permanent residence.

All governmental dues are required (if applicable).

Note that, the table does not include any additional costs like shipping.

5. How long does the process take?

Express Entry is a fast process to Canada. If an individual has received their ITA upon entering the entry pool, you can submit your application. However, the whole process takes roughly six months or less than that. Here are activities that may require your time:

a. Receiving ITA: Some individuals receive their ITA immediately after entering the Express Entry pool, while others may take longer. On the other hand, some candidates may never receive theirs.
b. Applying for Immigration: candidates can apply for their immigration immediately, while it could take more than 60 days for others – they may need to gather the rest of their documents.
c. Making decisions: IRCC processes applications within six months, while some may be longer due to making decisions.

Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP)

PNP is a program for workers. However, the following are important as the individuals must:

i. Have the education, skills, and work experience that will improve the economy of the Canadian territory.
ii. Remain in that particular province
iii. Be ready to be a permanent resident of Canada

There are different immigration programs peculiar to each territory and province. A province’s immigration program has its target group: students, skilled workers, business people, and semi-skilled workers. Similarly, these programs have their requirements.

What are the application options?

Since the Provincial Nominee Program has different streams, the application method varies accordingly. However, you need a police check certificate and medical report for either Express Entry or non-Express Entry.

How does the non-Express Entry process work?

Each candidate is to apply to the territory or province for nomination via the non-Express Entry stream. As a candidate, you have to meet the requirements of the territory or province for them to be able to nominate you. After nomination, you can apply for permanent residence online.

Unlike the non-Express system, the application processing time requires more than Express Entry.

Business Immigration

The Business immigration program is for individuals that think they have successful businesses and want to establish this in a new environment. The program facilitates and encourages business startups worldwide to come to have a new establishment in Canada.

Start-up Business

A startup business can operate in Canada if it meets the following criteria:

  1. The business has an assigned angel investor group that has invested a minimum of $75,000. Your business can have more than two angel investor groups investing a minimum of $75,000.
  2. Your business must have an assigned venture capital fund investing a minimum of $200,000. Also, your business can have two or more venture capital funds investing a minimum of $200,000.
  3. An assigned business incubator that accepts applicants into their program.

The Requirements are:

a. Commitment from a Designated Entity

A letter of support is proof of support by private sector organizations. It shows that they are ready to commit to your new business. Hence, their further details are a Commitment Certificate to IRCC for assessment. However, the letter of support is only valid for six months.

b. Settlement Funds

It is essential to know that the Canada Government does not give financial assistance to business immigrants. Individuals must have sufficient money to cater to their living costs or family. The funds must be:
– Free of obligations or debts.
– Transferable and available.

The settlement fund is not a loan. Also, the size of your family will contribute to how much your settlement fund should be. Your application will only be processed when you add proof of settlement funds to the application.

Since your money will be in a bank or financial institution, your letter must:

    • Be printed with the letterhead of the financial institution.
    • You must include your name and contact details like (Telephone number, email address, and home address).
    • Has details on your loans and credit card debts.
    • A bank detail of your account numbers, their current balance, the date the accounts were opened, and their average balance in the last six months.

c. Proficiency in French, English or both languages

Language proficiency in English or French is inevitable. You can use a copy of the result from a testing agency approved by IRCC for your application.
For French:
– Test d’evaluation de francais (TEF Canada)
– Test de connaissance du francais (TCF Canada)
For English:
– Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP)
– International English Language Testing System
Ensure you include the result for your application to be processed.

Meeting all three requirements increases one’s chance of moving into Canada as a Start-up Business Class.

It is important to note that investment refers to buying shares or equity in the applicant’s business. Similarly, the company is not allowed with convertible debenture or convertible debt.

Commitment refers to an agreement between a designated entity and an applicant to incorporate a qualifying business in the country. The entity must be the same on the designated private sector business’ list. Its details and proof are submitted as an agreement with a client.

The applicant must have at least 10% voting rights to all shares of the corporation as of the time of application. More so, the designated entity and applicants must have over 50% of the overall voting rights that may pertain to the shares at the application time.

The commitment certificate is sent to IRCC electronically from the business incubator, venture capital fund or designated angel investor. This application must contain a letter of support from the angel investor group, business incubator, or venture capital fund.

The Exception;

You cannot apply under the Start-up Business Class if you reside in Quebec. Rather, check out Quebec’s requirements for selecting their candidates.

It is important to note that your immigration representative will demand a fee for their support. Nevertheless, there is a limit to how much they can do for you. for example, your immigration representative cannot:

a. Create a portal account for you

c. Log into your account via the username and password

The applicant is expected to read the declaration, type their name, and submit it online.

The processing time varies due to different reasons. The ideal time is between one month to six months.

If all requirements are intact, you will get a letter that contains their application number. This letter is a nod for the principal applicant to connect their application with the online account. Subsequently, you can monitor the status of your application by receiving updates on the next line of action.

Its three major pathways are:

Migrating from Other Countries to Manitoba

Manitoba is a top destination to live in. The province is safe and clean, with friendly inhabitants. You can be assured that the relaxed environment is a lavish lifestyle for you and your family. Its diversified economy encourages foreign investors, while the low cost of living attracts students and employees.
Winnipeg is the capital of Manitoba. The population is estimated to be around 750,000. The city is known for its many employment, quality education, and encouraging level of entertainment. You will get the best deals on housing in Canada at Winnipeg.

Undoubtedly, it is one of the most considered options for immigrants coming from other countries into Manitoba. There is always a balance between work life and other areas of people’s lives.

Do you know that Manitoba has over 200 languages in the whole province? However, they all live in harmony. It is a welcoming ground for different people across different cultures. You can move from countries like the US, Ukraine, the UK, or other European countries.

Settling in Manitoba is easy as there is always a perfect welcoming community for every person.

Migrating from Ukraine to Manitoba

Just as Canada has been a top destination for many immigrants worldwide, it has been a similar story for Ukrainians. Right from the early 1900s, Ukrainians have been populating Canada. It is over 100 years later, and Canada still has its hands open to Ukrainians.

Understanding the unpleasant situation in Ukraine, Canada is out to support interested people affected by the invasion of Russia. Ukrainian families can get visitor visas which have a short processing time. Hence, they can quickly settle in Canada in a temporary and safe home.

Similarly, other provinces, settlement, and territories in the country are expanding their services to allow immigrants from Ukraine and their relatives to have a place to lay their heads. Here are some of the structures that help immigrants from Ukraine into Canada:

Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel Measures

War is chaotic as it can displace businesses, lives, and even properties. This is due to its level of emergency. The Canadian government has responded to this accurately by creating a system known as Canada Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET).

CUAET is out to help Ukrainians and their relatives settle in Canada, where they can study or be able to work during their temporary stay.

NB: Temporary residence programs are targeted at Ukrainians affected by the Russian invasion. As the program’s implies, Canada is providing a temporary safe haven till the people can travel back to Ukraine.

However, a temporary resident may want to apply for permanent residence. They can do this at the end of their brief stay through our different programs.

If you are outside Canada, you can follow any of the following CUAET measures:

  1. The visitor must have a visa.
However, the qualities of the visa include:
    – The visa is fee-exempt
    – It gives a choice to apply for an open work permit that is fee-exempt too.
    – Finally, the processing of the visa is based on its level of priority
  2. Approved application.
Once your application has been approved, the next step is to submit your passport. The reason is that there needs to be a physical counterfoil. Nevertheless, some visas are foil-less due to eligibility.
All Ukrainian nationals and their relatives are eligible for physical counterfoil, even if travelling from any country. This is valid for multiple entries to Canada. People can travel in and out of Canada if their passports and visas are valid. The physical counterfoil is valid as long as your passport is valid or could be up to 10 years.
  3. Arriving at the Border
    Upon your arrival at THE Canadian border, you have to be accorded any of the following statuses;
    a. Worker – an individual ready to work
    b. Visitor
    c. Student – if you are a student either at a primary or secondary level. Studying at the post-secondary school level has different requirements.

You can stay in Canada for about three years. Also, you can apply to extend your stay if you think you may want to remain in Canada a little longer. It is important to know the expiry date of your visitor record to know when the status may expire.

Who can apply?

If you are not in the country, you can apply with your:

a. A Ukrainian passport that is valid or
b. Any other national identity document.

You may still be able to apply for people that may not have any of the above. However, you will need a temporary resident permit from an officer that will allow you to move to Canada.

Can someone apply for you?

Yes, a member of your family or friend can apply for you. However, they must indicate that they are applying for another person. They should submit the application on the “Use of a Representative form.”

If the individual applying for you is an authorized paid representative, they should submit their application via the “Authorized Paid Representative Portal.”
You can apply for minor children, too, as they cannot carry out the application processes alone. Hence, you need the following documents for them:

a. A document that can serve as their birth certificate
b. A letter from the parent, not travelling, if there is one

Fingerprints and biometrics

Biometrics often include fingerprints and photos. You do not have to pay any fee for the biometrics. When you submit your application, there is always an accompanying instruction letter on biometrics. Often, you have to submit your biometrics within 30 days. You do not have to seek permission if you need to extend the deadline. The deadline is extended till you go to a biometrics collection site.

Medical Exam

A good side of travelling to Canada as a Ukrainian immigrant is that you do not need any medical exam. The only charge is often for blood tests and chest X-rays.

Fees

Similarly, you are not required to pay fees for the following:

– Open work permit
– Visitor visa
– Biometrics
– Study permit
– Temporary resident permit

You should tell the officer if you are applying to Canada for work or study reasons. This will help them give you the perfect document you need to study, work, or be in Canada for more than six months.

Migrating from the US to Manitoba

The relationship between the United States and Canada has been from way back. There are several reasons people move from the US to Canada. Notable causes can include having a fresh start, dreaming of having a new space, relocation due to work reasons, or wanting a more pleasant scene.

The number of immigrants from America to Canada has increased drastically. Many migrants from the US prefer Canada because they have similar attributes. They can’t be wrong about the country as there are polite and lovely people.

In 2019, there were over 10,000 residents from the US that moved to Canada. This section explains the immigration process to Canada and even becoming a permanent resident as a US citizen.

Like moving from other countries into Canada, Express Entry is the best way to move from the US. There are three different options you can consider. They include:

a. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW)
b. Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST)
c. Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

All of these programs have been previously explained in this content. You can read them up and follow the due process.

Like every province, Manitoba has its own Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) for its skilled workers.

Moving to Canada from the US to work may require different work permits. There are other circumstances for that. Check which category you may belong to:

  1. NAFTA Work permits
NAFTA stands for North American Free Trade Agreement. It represents an agreement between the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The reason is to encourage trade between these countries as it allows them to welcome temporary workers to their economy. With the NAFTA Work Permit, you can efficiently work in Canada from the United States. You can obtain your work permit via the International Mobility Program for American Citizens. You can work in Canada with this work permit without getting a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). Similarly, American companies can send some workers or employees to their Canadian branches to fill executive or managerial roles.
  2. Spousal Open Work Permit
A spousal open work permit is for individuals who are international students or temporary foreign workers in Canada. Also, people who followed the inland sponsorship process are eligible for this work permit. Also, there is no need to get a new work permit if you get a new job.
  3. Employer-Specific Work Permit
An employer-specific work permit is for a person who got a valid job in Canada. However, you will need an LMIA document to prove that your employer is a permanent resident or citizen of Canada. Finally, you will need a new work permit if you want to change your job upon arriving in Manitoba.

Other important information you should know about migrating from the US to Manitoba

– What can I expect as an international student moving into Canada?

Studying in Canada is different from other countries as Canadian schools have lower tuition fees, a shorter period to process visas, and bring to work immediately. With your permit, you can work for 20 hours a week as a student while in session. However, you can work 40 hours a week during the holidays and breaks.

You can get a Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) to stay longer in Canada since you came in through a study program. Your PGWP can mean another three years of living in Canada. Also, unlike the US and other top countries, you do not need to spend too much on feeding and accommodation as they are cheaper in Canada than in other places.

– What about visiting Canada?

Visiting Canada with a valid US passport means you do not need an electronic travel visa (eTA) or a Canadian Visa. Instead, you only need a visitor visa that brings you into the country since you are not a permanent resident or Canadian citizen. The US is a visa-exempt country, as you can come in as a US Green Card Holder.

As a visitor, your visa allows you to stay legally in Canada for almost six months to travel. In addition, you can look for work or even be a part of short-term study programs. The only clause is that you cannot apply for a study or work permit in Canada.

– Inadmissibility

Is it possible to be inadmissible to Canada despite meeting other requirements to migrate from the USA to Canada? Yes, it is possible. Two situations can be responsible for this inadmissibility. They are:

a. Medical inadmissibility
b. Criminal inadmissibility

Canada will prevent any incoming person they think may have some medical condition that risks the lives of Canadian citizens. In as much as the situation can warrant an excessive demand on the social and publicly funded health service, the person may be inadmissible into Canada or any of its provinces like Manitoba.
